A Ten-Cent Idea

When young F. W. Woolworth was a store clerk, he tried to convince his boss to have a ten-cent sale to reduce inventory.

The boss agreed, and the idea was a resounding success. This inspired Woolworth to open his own store and price items at a nickel and a dime. He needed capital for such a venture, so he asked his boss to supply the capital for part interest in the store.

His boss turned him down flat. "The idea is too risky," he told Woolworth. "There are not enough items to sell for five and ten cents." Woolworth went ahead without his boss's backing, and he not only was successful in his first store, but eventually he owned a chain of F. W. Woolworth stores across the nation. Later, his former boss was heard to remark, "As far as I can figure out, every word I used to turn Woolworth down cost me about a million dollars."

Fibromyalgia X

I Don’t Fit In Those Categories…

Q: If I never had an injury to my neck or cervical spine or the other two reasons, how is it possible that I have fibromyalgia?

A: It’s possible that you may have had an injury that you don’t recall because you were too young. It’s possible that there are other causes for the disorder as well.

Some researchers blame bacteria or viruses for triggering fibromyalgia while others state that metabolic or hormonal changes, especially in thyroid hormone are the cause.

Others believe that changes or abnormalities in the sympathetic nervous system, the part of the nervous system that helps us deal with extreme stress and survival situations are behind the real cause of fibromyalgia. No one really knows for sure.

There are some studies that show that fibromyalgia sufferers are more sensitive to pain signals in the brain. This causes higher levels of neutrotransmitters that are created in the brain. With higher levels of neurotransmitters, the least little trigger to the pain receptors such as a touch of the forearm can cause pain.

Supination Can be associated with a high arch!

Supination occurs when the foot rolls outward at the ankle. The most common symptoms of supination are pain through the arch of the foot or pain in the heel. The pain can usually be associated with plantar fascitis or heel spurs. Other symptoms can be back and knee pain.

Goals of Spinal Decompression

The main goal in spinal decompression is to decrease intradiscal pressure while targeting an exact disc. This reduction has a powerful influence on the healing process, by increasing blood and fibroblast supplies. Pain relief is accomplished by decreasing pressure on the soft tissue. When intradiscal pressures are reduced into the negative range of about 175mm/hg, true spinal decompression occurs in the disc and nerve roots. This effect causes retraction of herniations, and increases the influx of protein, oxygen and other co-factors. This in turn facilitates disc repair, and reduces leakage from the nucleus. The end result is a healthier, happier spinal disc.

Dr. Harry Llwewllyn’s Experience

I was reading when I first felt a dull ache in my lower back. The ache continued on and off for days. I knew that a car accident in my childhood had caused a severe lordosis or abnormal inward curvature of the lumbar vertebrae, but the injury had never affected me until now. Being a medical doctor, I followed the typical route of back x-rays and orthopedic surgeons. I was told I could avoid lying down on my back, tolerate the pain or try surgery. Not one of these answers appealed to me.

My brother-in-law advised me to visit a chiropractor. After a month of adjustments, I could read without any back pain. After five months of adjustments, I drove 18 hours back to New Jersey without any back pain. Until then, my limit in a car was 30 minutes.

Will a Back Corset Weaken Your Back Muscles?

Patients ask this question over and over. I often prescribe a back corset for people who have low back problems. It is a sound medical principle to use an external back support. It is the same as taping a sprained ankle or using a knee brace.

By returning to sports competition after back trouble, you will use the muscles of your back and abdomen more vigorously than if you do nothing. Even with the brace on, your muscles will become stronger. Realistically the back brace should be considered a way to build up the back muscles. It is not the enemy; it is a friend. It will not lead to weakening of your back muscles!

Low Back Pain: One Symptom, Many Causes

· Strenuous activity, overuse or improper use (repetitive or heavy lifting, vibration, pressure, etc.)

· Physical trauma, injury or fracture

· Obesity (often caused by increased weight on the spine and pressure on the spinal discs)

· Protruding or herniated (slipped) disk

· Tightness, spasm, injury and strain of back muscles

· Joint problems (e.g., spinal stenosis - narrowing of the spinal canal, which compresses the spinal cord and the nerve roots)

· Poor muscle tone in the core or stabilizing muscles of the back

Needing surgery?

The New England Journal of Medicine reported that surgery is overused for the treatment of back pain!

If you or someone you know is suffering from back pain, don’t rush off to get surgery. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that surgery is overused for the treatment of back pain! In fact, the rate of all types of back surgery is more than 40% higher in the US than in any other country.

Furthermore, it should be noted that surgery does not always improve the outcome and in some cases can even make the condition worse.

There is considerable evidence supporting the use of conservative, non-surgical treatments for back pain. Consult with your Doctor of Chiropractic to see if conservative care to correct the cause of your lower back pain is an appropriate option for you.

Golf, Posture and Chiropractic

We all know what a great game golf is? It is a sport you can play into your 70’s and there is nothing better then the scent of fresh cut grass in the air.

Recently I was on vacation, and I was able to frequent the golf course on three different occasions. I love watching golfers hit golf balls, because everyone seems to do it in a different fashion? The driving range is the most fun to watch, because people are trying to crush the ball.

The one ingredient I noticed that was missing in 90% of the golfers was they all had improper posture while addressing the golf ball. That is kind of like Kobe Bryant trying to shoot free throws facing in the wrong direction. It is not going to happen! I trained with Paul Callaway of Body Balance for Performance a few years ago, and that was one of his pet peeves.

Most golfers have tight chest muscles, and weak stomach/core muscles. In my chiropractic clinic I also find that most right handed golfers have a very tight right hip region overall. Playing golf like this is equivalent to driving your car with the emergency brake on.

The solution to this above common scenario is to get a full body golf evaluation! This will help detect weaknesses and will help strengthen and fine tune your body. The end result is an improved golf game.

In my chiropractic clinic I have 24 years experience helping golfers reach their true potential. We also have Spinal Decompression available to help eliminate chronic back pain.

Healthfully Yours,

Walking and Chiropractic

The average person takes about 10,000 steps on a daily basis. The feet provide stability and balance for your body. Fallen arches can effect your body’s position and weight distribution. Structural foot problems can create neck and low back pain. This in turn causes the hips and knees to overwork.

Your Doctor of Chiropractic knows that foot imbalances can be corrected by adjustments to the feet, and you may also be fitted for orthotics. Orthotics can help balance the body, and provide stability to injured areas.

Foot problems may not always result in pain. Your chiropractic adjustments also have less chance of holding if the feet are out of balance.

Consult your chiropractor if you are experiencing back and foot problems.

Golfers….want to improve your golf game?

Are you a golfer but back pain is keeping you from your game?  Low back and neck pain are main reasons that golfers cannot play or play at their best.

When you’re injured it is hard to play your best game! We have the answer to your problem.

The procedure is Spinal Decompression Therapy (also known as Spinal Decompression or SD).  SD is a non-surgical therapy proven to treat back pain with significant results.

Over a series of relaxing treatment sessions, patients experience powerful pain reduction and healing.  Some patients even notice an improvement in their symptoms after the first few treatments.

Patients enjoy lasting results, a four year study on the lasting effects of Spinal Decompression showed remarkable levels of sustained relief from back pain in patients that had undergone therapy.

71% showed more than 50% reduction in pain immediately after treatment.

52% of respondents reported a pain level of zero.

Average pain levels were reduced from 7.41 to 1.57

Employment status increased by 40% among those previously out of     work due to back pain.

We have treated many patients with conditions ranging from golf injuries, back pain, and neck pain.

My clinic uses Spinal Decompression to help patients who have had little success with other treatments.  This FDA approved Spinal Decompression has been the most important medical advance in the non-surgical, non-invasive treatment of back pain in the last ten years.

For anyone that lives in the Southern California area, I do offer a NO COST exam that determines if Spinal Decompression can help you.  If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me at this blog.

My name is Dr. Bob Moulas D.C…..I have been practicing in Orange California for over 24 years.  After serving in the U.S. Marine Corp., I attended Fullerton College, and later studied at Cleveland Chiropractic College.

I believe in a personal interaction with my patients, and I have a genuine concern for your well-being and long term health.

Back Pain and Sciatica

Sciatica is a feeling of pain, numbness, or tingling into the buttocks and thighs. The cause of this nerve disorder is due to the pinching of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body.

Major causes of sciatica are: herniated discs, bulging discs, degenerative discs and bones out of place in the spine. Sciatica can also be caused by tumors, arthritis, muscle spasms, and pregnancy. Sciatica responds well to chiropractic adjustments, and spinal decompression.

Depression Part I

This is a subject that will affect most people some time in their life. Some get angry, and others become withdrawn. The good news is most cases of depression are short lived, and not serious.

Cardinal signs of depression are: fatigue, back and neck pain, headaches, loss of appetite, binge eating and worse case scenarios include suicidal thoughts.

Depression causes are vast. It can be brought on by stress, improper food intake, allergies and sugar. Lack of sunlight in the winter months can also trigger depression. Research has shown that two hours of a.m. sun is great towards alleviating depression.

Consult a qualified physician if depression is effecting your life.

Health Report U.S. GOVERNMENT REPORT SAYS CHIROPRACTIC IS BEST FOR LOWER BACK PAIN

According to a government study done by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, spinal manipulation is the most effective treatment for acute lower back pain.

Lower-back pain is suffered, at one time or another, by up to 80 percent of adult Americans. Next to the common cold, it is the most common reason men and women visit primary care physicians.

For lower back pain this is some of what the report recommends:

1. Spinal manipulation by a chiropractor.

2. Low-stress exercise such as walking, swimming or biking, if the problems are “mild or moderate.”

3. More rigorous “conditioning exercises” for the trunk muscles to start and gradually increase after the first two weeks of pain.

What Doctors Do To Get Out Of Pain

It’s called a breakthrough in the treatment of neck and back pain. It feels good, and is non-surgical. So what’s the answer? It is Spinal Decompression!! The Mayo Clinic and John Hopkins are using it with a success rate of about 90%.

How Does Spinal Decompression Work?

Spinal Decompression provides relief to severe back and neck pain sufferers by gently reducing the pressure within spinal discs. The bones of the spine are slowly and methodically separated using the state-of-the-art DYNA PRO Spinal Decompression Unit. As the vertebrae are separated pressure is slowly reduced within the disc (intradiscal pressure) until a vacuum is formed. This vacuum “sucks” the gelatinous center of the disc back inside thereby reducing the disc bulge or disc herniation. Significant disc bulge reduction removes pressure off the spinal nerves and drastically reduces pain and disability. This “sucking” vacuum also pulls much-needed oxygen, nutrients and fluid into injured and degenerated discs allowing the healing to begin.
The treatment motion is computer controlled to provide gentle and painless decompression of the injured spinal discs. Advanced DYNA PRO decompression techniques separate slowly and cycle between brief moments of pulling and relaxing (oscillation). This reduces protective muscle spasm that contributed to the poor success rate of outdated “traction” techniques.

How Do Spinal Discs Become Injured?

Over time gravity, spinal joint dysfunction and accumulated trauma cause the discs to compress, flatten and degenerate. Significant disc damage can become a tear called a disc herniation. The “jelly center” of the disc can also dry out over time which is referred to as degenerative disc disease. All forms of disc injury can eventually impinge on the nerves exiting the spine (“pinched nerve”) which can create numbness, tingling, burning or sharp pain down the arms or legs. Sharp pain originating from the back and “shooting” down the legs is often referred to as sciatica. The only treatment that can reverse this degenerative compression is NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION or THE DYNA PRO!
Spinal Decompression Can Treat The Following Conditions

· Sciatica
· Neck Disc Bulge
· Herniated Disc-Back
· Herniated Disc-Neck
· Pinched Nerve
· Degenerative Disc Disease
