Supination Can be associated with a high arch!

Supination occurs when the foot rolls outward at the ankle. The most common symptoms of supination are pain through the arch of the foot or pain in the heel. The pain can usually be associated with plantar fascitis or heel spurs. Other symptoms can be back and knee pain.

  1. Dr. Bob,

Thanks for your post on supination! What is the treatment for supination?

  2. Pete,
Since the number one cause of Supination is heredity Supination is also common in children. If a child has Supination and is diagnosed before the age of five the child could be given a night brace, custom orthotics, and a variety exercises until the growth of the ankle is complete. Then later as an adult they may have to wear custom orthotics so the supination does not return. If supination is diagnosed as an adult then treatment consists of custom made orthotics and exercises. If the supination is too severe for these treatments then surgury may be needed. Great question, Thanks for the comment! Come back anytime.

  3. Could this also be from wearing the wrong shoes when I do power walking?

  4. Candy,
The proper shoe is important, but supination is a bit complex, and handled by a qualified Dr.
    Thanks,
    Dr.Bob
