Zinc and Health

This mineral is used by the body to produce cells and keep you healthy. A primary source of zinc is red meat, but don’t despair, because zinc is found in eggs, nuts, yogurt, grains and cooked oysters.

Alcohol, diuretics, and antibiotics have a detrimental effect on zinc. Taking too much calcium also impairs zinc absorption.

Hair loss, depression, appetite loss, rashes and decreased immune response are all signs of zinc deficiency.

The recommended daily allowance of zinc is 15-30 mg.

Magnesium and Health

Magnesium is a mineral that is involved with over 100 chemical reactions in the human body. Guess what? Seventy-five percent of Americans are deficient in this mineral! Muscles will cramp up quickly if deprived of magnesium. Think that one through athletes.

Magnesium works with potassium to perform its functions. Calcium and magnesium should be taken in a 2-1 ratio for optimal benefits.

Magnesium can be found in the following foods: oatmeal, bananas, yogurt, avocados and baked potatoes. The recommended daily amount of magnesium is 500-1000 mg.

Dr. Moulas on Building Strong Bones Part III

During the last three decades, a naturally occurring compound has been studied which provides highly absorbable calcium and much, much more. This substance, called Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite (MCHC), has been shown in a number of scientific studies to be far superior to traditional calcium supplements or bone meal. MCHC was even found to increase bone density and restore bone in a group of post-menopausal women in which calcium alone could only slow, or at best stop, the process of bone loss. This exciting supplement is now available through our office.

Dr. Moulas on Building Strong Bones Part II

"Milk - it does the body good." But unfortunately many people have lost the ability to properly digest and metabolize dairy products. Milk allergy is one of the most common food allergies known. So, Milk isn’t for everyone! You have no doubt seen advertisements suggesting you take Tums “for the calcium you need”. Tums is an antacid which contains calcium carbonate. Ironically, when the normal acid secreted in your stomach is neutralized, calcium is very poorly absorbed. The digestion and absorption of other nutrients is also impaired. Calcium carbonate is a very cheap form of calcium, but it is not well absorbed by many people.
